#AUTOCAD DRAWING UNIT HOW TO#
Knowing how to scale an image in AutoCAD, scale a pdf in AutoCAD, and scale drawings in AutoCAD will impact how successful your model will be. See Figure 2 to see what this looks like with the steps below. But what if a floor plan on an image background says that the distance between two columns is 3 ft., but it doesn’t appear to be true to dimension size once it’s inserted in your drawing? You can use the ALIGN command to confirm dimensions on what is inserted as an external reference. Through the XREF window, you may attach these items at whatever scale you choose. Many times, PDFs, images, and other drawing files are provided to CAD designers as something to draw on top of or use as a basis for design in AutoCAD. Here is how you can use just some of the various AutoCAD scale commands and tools to make sure your drawings are properly communicating the visual aspects of the design. It’s crucial to accurately scale your drawings, especially since many of the components and systems need to go into an actual building. If your drawings aren’t scaled properly, miscommunication and other unfavorable results occur.

Similarly, the idea of scaling external references, blocks, text, and the plotted drawing itself in AutoCAD is important because it impacts how things are installed and built to code in the field. Without considering scale in each of the components, the model is confusing and inaccurate. In the case of a model train and its surrounding terrain, scale is important because the model visually represents an accurate depiction of what a real-life train and its surroundings would look like. Setting your units is a per drawing setting and is very important if you are going to be sharing your drawings and if you expect to be inserting or linking your drawings into other applications or even other Autocad drawings. If you’ve ever seen a model of a small electronic train chugging along a little metal track lined with cotton-ball bushes and a painted foam mountain, you’ve seen how important scale is. Scale and units are very important in Autocad however it is often overlooked.

You can set the units by using the UNITS command and setting the “Insertion Scale” setting. We can tell Autocad what units we are drawing to, this helps when linking or importing drawings together as Autocad will automatically scale two drawing drawn at different scales so they are the correct size. It is important that you know what units you are drawing in and stick to it as you cannot mix units in a drawing. At this point it could be Inches, it could be meters, Autocad doesnt know. Unitsīy default Autocad is unitless, how can you draw without units you may ask?Įasy, I can still draw a line 100 long and it would be twice the length of a line 50 long but they wont have any units. Simply select the viewport and change the scale in the toolbar in the bottom right. Autocad takes your 1:1 drawing from model space and will correctly scale your drawing to any scale and any sheet size. Paperspace can be set to any scale you want. You could draw at any scale you want but Autocad wont know that you have done this and your measurements and sheet scales will all be wrong. In model space always draw 1:1, why? because model space is 1:1.

I will start with scale as its the easiest and most often missunderstood. For example if a drawing is 1:20 then if I draw a line 1cm in length it would represent 20cm. S cale: Once you know what units you are drawing in, you need to know what scale. This has to be specifed otherwise Autocad is drawing unitless (I will explain unitless below). Units: This is the measurement type you are drawing in, for example if you are using Meters, Feet, Inches, Millimeters. So lets quickly explain what scale and units are just so we are all clear. In this post I am going to address Scale and Units as they are both tied together and you need to understand both. Want to know what scale and units Autocad uses and to change them? It is a common question and one which is often gotten wrong by people who think they know.
